School is Out!

Thank you for your support this year! Each of your children has made significant progress. As you hit the dusty trail for your family vacations, remember to keep them practicing what they have learned in school.

Infants and Toddlers Do your best to keep infants and toddlers on a consistent schedule. Yes,  you will want to stay up a little later and look at the stars, but if you ease them back into the school routine a few weeks before school starts again the transition will be a smoother one. Help them to be responsible for setting their places at the table, clearing their places and preparing a simple snack. As soon as they are walking sturdily they can take on some family responsibilities such as filling the dog’s water dish or watering plants. The key is to provide a small pitcher or watering can so when (not if) the spills happen, they are easily mopped up – if you also have a child-sized mop or small cleaning cloth, they can do their best with cleaning up their own spills.

Early Childhood First year ec students are refining self-care skills such as setting places, washing dishes, preparing simple dishes and folding laundry. Second year students have been introduced to numbers and phonetic letter sounds. When on the beach or at the park, write a number in the sand and ask your child to collect that many rocks, shells or leaves. When you write a lower case letter, ask your child to find objects that begin or end with that sound.

Third year students can find the middle sound in a three-letter word – “What is the middle sounds in cat?” Ask them to practice writing phonetic words, practicing proper letter placement in pencil so they can correct mistakes. Give them simple addition and subtraction problem to practice. And give them more practice at cooking with you.

Elementary and Middle School Keep these students reading, writing and working out practical math problems like calculating the miles you will travel to the next hotel or how much groceries will cost. What if your child plans the next backyard barbecue?

Everyone For all ages, read aloud together every evening – choose books that are a little above your child’s level that the whole family will enjoy. Provide a sketch pad and a variety of media to practice drawing, painting, collaging and recording summer adventures through art. And wherever you go, visit museums and historical sites.

Summers are short in Park City so treasure each day and spend some time watching clouds, skipping stones and finding shooting stars with your child.

Evergreen middle school students met with Mayor Nan Worel to discuss their questions and answer hers.
